Jason Schembri grew up in Sydney, and has always had an interest in photography. But it wasn't until he got to college he really started shooting: "- The high school I attended wasn't very well equipped in regards to a darkroom and equipment, so once I left school I went straight into a photography college, which was around the time I started shooting." Now he's been shooting for about five years, and his work has been published in magazines such as Academy for Men, Peppermint Magazine and Aesthetica Magazine. But Jason is just getting started, and he has a lot more coming up later this year: "- I'm going to keep shooting and start working on bigger projects in the next few months, including more magazine work and exhibitions. I'd like to start focusing on finding my feet in the industry, and eventually I'd like to base myself between Sydney and London." When I asked him about his inspirations, he explains that he's always had a strong obsession with ancient Greek mythology: "- It's so bitter-sweet, a tragic world of mystery, beauty and ugliness. I'm also inspired by the work of Helmut Newton, particularly the way he depicts these women as so powerful and sexual. That being said, my biggest inspiration would probably be people in general. Strangers on the train, people I come across while travelling, I like to make up stories in my mind about who they are and what they do, and whenever that happens I get a strong itch to pick up my camera and try to show that." Here's some of his work: More pictures inside the post.
