"- I love grit and grime. Anything imperfect and organic," says Harper Smith about what inspires her. "The shapes and spaces of nature are really important in my compositions. Color is huge to me too, so if I am shooting indoors I love a colorful and nostalgic palate. Most of my shoots are thematically inspired by a film or piece of music."
This time inspired by "- the garb and attitude of the incredible train wreck, Courtney Love," the LA based photographer has just shot her first Ben Trovato exclusive. HEART SHAPED BOX features Kelly Ash (Q) and Brea (LA Models) who was styled by Wild At Heart, and had make up and hair done by Sunnie Brook Jones. Harper adds: "- We wanted to create a fun poppy shoot that conveyed the style and persona of 90's grunge."
She didn't get serious about photography until her senior year of high school, but says she has always been inspired by 2D art and sculpture, du to her mother being an artist: "- She never fails to amaze me with her eye for natural beauty and graphic composition. she taught me to think like a photographer before I even knew I would become one."
Harper's work has been featured in publications such as Nylon, Hooligan, Blend, Foam, Factory, Remember Paper and Tokion, and today she's making her debut on Ben Trovato.

Dollface by Kelly Jill
Kelly Jill has shot for publications such as Chaos, Vancouver Fashion eZine, String Magazine, XO, Ouch!, IKI, C-Heads, and Bello, and today she's making her debut on Ben Trovato with an exclusive story titled Dollface, featuring model Veronica from Richards International Model Management. Veronica was styled by Vincent Lee, with fashion provided by Aldo, Zara, H&M, Carla Miranda, Anna Kosturova and others. Make up was done by Talysia Ayala using MAC Cosmetics.
The Vancouver based photographer says this about the story: "- Dollface is basically about Veronica. dolled up almost looking like a Barbie doll." And then she adds: "- Usually it’s a face and a moment that inspires me. Regardless of whom I’m taking a photo of. A model, a regular person, a kid... I usually try to get a character or personality into the images, and capture a moment in time. I think it’s the key ingredient to how I create photographs."
She started taking pictures back when her older daughter was about four with the intention of having her husband photograph her and her daughter: "- But instead found myself behind the lens more often, mesmerized at the endless possibilities of capturing moments. I was photographing couples and weddings for a while, until I stumbled upon a shot I took of a couple that looked to me a bit like a fashion photo. That led me to jump into fashion photography, and just completely enjoy the thrill of mixing fashion, expressions/emotions, and imagination - all of which i feel are important in making an image interesting."

Photography by Ann He
She's 16 years old, based out of Dallas, and she takes beautiful pictures. Ann He is truly what Ben Trovato is all about: -an extraordinary up and coming and talented photographer. She says her inspiration is somewhat like a melting pot of beautiful imagery she comes across online, the mood that certain music evokes, and most of all the models she works with: "- I used to dream up elaborate sets and visualized each frame in my mind, but now I just arrive on a shoot tabula rasa and work with what is happening in that moment."
Ann started shooting a couple of years ago, but shifted her focus towards more fashion and portraits last summer. Since then her work has been featured in both Youth Vision Magazine and Elle Girl Korea, and she's got new editorials coming up in DMAG and N.E.E.T. Magazine soon. And right now? "- Right now I'm in the process of planning and setting up many shoots with beautiful people and beautiful locations. Besides fashion, I also hope to focus more on candid photos and also artistic concepts. I feel that taking a break from the demands of fashion will help bring me closer to my own vision and photography."

The Abandoned by Billy Rood
Chicago based photographer Billy Rood has just shot his first exclusive for Ben Trovato. The Abandoned features the mysterious Hilary Anderson who was styled by Helen Berkun, and had hair and make up done by Traci Fine.
Billy says this about the story: "- Well this particular story was inspired by a town called GARY, IN. It was known to be the murder capital of the world, and is pretty much abandoned. Most of the town is spread apart with abandoned buildings everywhere. I went to check it out one day and decided to use it for a fashion story. I know from the feel of the locations I wanted the story to be pretty but extremely creepy and mysterious at the same time. Thought the contrast of soft and pretty to the abandoned and the decaying buildings would be interesting."
Billy's work has been featured in publications such as Bambi Magazine, The Dirty Durty Diary, Factio, KITTEN and CS Magazine, and he's currently in the process of moving to New York.
He started teaching himself photography back in 2008, and fashion photography followed the year after: "- It wasn't until 2009 where I became interested in fashion photography. About 6 months after I started to get more serious into my work and developing my style."
He says that most of his inspiration comes from his dreams, stories, and music, and adds: "- The combination of those 3 always take me to places I end up wanting to photograph or tell. I love location shooting as well...especially to places that are unique and have a sense of history to them. But I am also inspired by timeless work of Tim Walker, Paolo Roversi, Glen Luchford, Steven Meisel & Bruno Aveillan."

Ambar by Gonzalo Corrado
Back in February Buenos Aires based photographer Gonzalo Corrado had his first feature on Ben Trovato, and now he's back with his first exclusive. Ambar features model Paula Gandolfo from Pink Models Management, who was styled by Frederico Laboureau, had make up done by Solange Perkes, and hair by Walter Pampin. Ana Guzik did the general production of the shoot.
Gonzalo says this about the story: "- The main theme for this shot was to show winter apparel inspired by our Andean cultures. That's why we mixed the hats, the woolen pieces, the silver accessories, all made by native cultures, and we mixed that with the nudity of the warm season here in the south, that we are leaving behind us.
I chose to work in a gold palette, to give it a warm feel, and accent the golden details with some movement on the shot."

Photography by David Perez
Fashion photographer David Perez grew up in Los Angeles, but relocated to NYC in 2006 to work as a photo assistant. Since then it has been a one way street for David: "- As of June 2008, I've been working full-time as a photographer. But the actual act of photographing came for me only after years of pondering and wonder on all things beautiful. So when I finally picked up the camera, it did not feel strange, it felt right."
Before he started photographing professionally, David studied Philosophy, B.A, at Arizona State University, and he says his inspiration comes from absolutely everything that influences him: "- Which is the entire universe. Eversince I can remember, I've always been enthusiast about the form and spirit of the woman. She is the greatest beauty and mystery. Each time I photograph her, I attempt to translate exactly what I feel when I see her, but it always comes up short. My inspiration is to give the woman's beauty and spirit some justice...to make imagery that is equal to the beauty of a woman."
His work has been featured in publications such as Let Them Eat Cake (UK), TimeOut New York, Clam (UK) and 100-Women Magazine, and there are many more to come.

Photography by Bryant Eslava
Young photographer Bryant Eslava is currently finishing his last year in high school in Orange County, California, before he'll shoot off to New York to earn his BFA in photography: "- On my days off from school in New York I'll be shooting for Nylon U.S and assisting some really well known photographers to get more experience working in the big apple."
His work has been published in a various amount of online publications, and he's a regular contributor to Nylon Magazine Mexico. He started shooting for real back in 2008: "- The main reason behind that is, I started to take photography serious by staying up hours and studying cameras on my own or finding inspirational music. These last four years seem to be a short amount of time, but to me it's feels longer, it feels more like ten since I've received so many great opportunities."
Bryant's inspiration is usually based off of music or dreams he's had: "- The genres of music that inspire are mainly Ambient/Downtempo/Dream-Pop. Some of the dreams I've had have been a blur, which lead me into remembering them for at least two days, which have inspired me into creating double exposure photographs."

Young Romantics by Chelsea Millunchick
Australian photographer, make up artist and blogger Chelsea Millunchick has just shot her first Ben Trovato Exclusive, called Young Romantics. The story that was shot at a beach in Half Moon Bay in California features models Brendon Beck and Nikki Winge with City Models San Francisco, who were styled by Ashley Farnaz, had hair done by Jenelle Oldham, and make up by Chelsea herself.
Chelsea says this about the story: "- This story is about young romantics, and that feeling you get when you first fall in love. It's that special moment when two lovers first share this secret together and they feel as if they are the only two people alive in the world. It's a wonderful sense of freedom and invincibility. Love is full of happy, quiet and intimate moments and it was important for me to capture all of these emotions. To emphasize the lover's seclusion, we shot at a wonderful deserted beach in Half Moon Bay, California. We worked as an amazing team who understood and appreciated the concept so it was carried out quite beautifully."
She's currently based out of San Francisco, and has had her work featured in publications such as VECU magazine and Cellardoor magazine, before today making her debut on Ben Trovato. Greatly inspired by nature and the timeless beauty of women, she loves to photograph girls in a more natural and genuine state: "- It's so the viewer can feel an authentic connection with the model. There is something magical about the elegance and vulnerability of a woman, and I like to capture those more intimate moments that inspire a story."
Chelsea is a make up artist by trade, and has been working with fashion photographers for the past 5 years: "- Working alongside talented photographers inspired me to become part of the bigger picture and I felt the need to create my own images and concepts. Then about 8 months ago, I started to photograph models and I absolutely love it."

Photography by Hicham Riad
Brussels based photographer Hicham RIad says he was saved by photography while finding himself unhappy studying business: "- Since I was a child, I’ve had this necessity of creation, to pass from the realm of emotion on to the tangible. And photography allows me to do that, to be able to capture a reality in which space and time are melted into one. I fulfills me."
He says he's inspired by film, music and other art, and of course his best friends, but in the moment of shooting the model is what inspires him: "- When I take a picture I feel like my head gets empty, and ultimately, it’s primarily and perhaps exclusively the photographed subject that inspires me."
At the moment Hicham's working on Brussels store Hunting and Collecting's SS11 shoot together with Belgian model Hannelore Knuts.

BIKERS DREAM by Hannah Hedin
She has worked for clients such as Levi's and Steve Terry, and today Hannah Hedin makes her debut on Ben Trovato. "The idea was to take some beautiful clothes in to a rough location. Beauty vs. Roughness." -says Hannah when asked about BIKERS DREAM -a story featuring model Ida G from Synk Casting, styled by Johanna Af Hökhufuvd, hair by Tóta Jóhannesdóttir, and make up done by Andrea Engström. Andrea and Hannah might be better known to some as Lilac, a creative duo with their own studio in Stockholm.
Hannah started shooting professionally less than two years ago, but says photography has always been a part of her: "- Even though it may seem that I'm new to the business, my love of photography has lived within me always. It began as a childhood dream of becoming a model and developed into a yearning to stand behind the camera. Now I have my own studio and company, LILAC - fashion photography concept." She finds inspiration in the works of photographers like Irving Penn and Camilla Åkrans: "- They are two photographers who I believe have set the bar on innovation and greatness. I am also inspired by the beauty of a woman. Some of my photographs flirt with sensuality and seduction without ever degrading or becoming sexually offensive to women. To me a woman is strong, beautiful and good. My images are a celebration of women, never a defamation of their spirit."

Photography by Elkie Vanstiphout
Multi-talented Elkie Vanstiphout writes music and does modelling from time to time, but it's her photographing skills that drew our attention: very intimate and sensual, some of them melancholic but always very beautiful and fragile. Some people would label it neo-romantic, but we prefer to say that Elkie has developed her own personal style.
You were originally born in Belgium but can nowadays be found in Dublin. How do you feel about the photography scene in Belgium? Do you feel Dublin has more to offer as a photographer?
Wait - Belgium HAS a photography scene!? I have some friends/contacts from Belgium who take absolutely lovely photos but I've never realized there was actually a scene. Don't think I'd ever get a job there doing what I do. Dublin has more to offer in the sense that there are more people doing it and they tend to see "photographer" more as an actual occupation, which is something I rarely felt in Belgium. But seeing as there's more people here that are doing it, it also makes it harder to actually stand out. It's the same everywhere, to be honest, no matter where you go, you have to work hard and be very lucky. I didn't come here to start my career though, I came here because I found love.
For how long have you been photographing? How did you start playing around with photography? Who or what inspires you?
I studied photography for a while but it wasn't until after I quit school around the age of 18 that I started doing it more and actually started loving it. So I bought my own camera and mostly took pictures of my friends and cats. Which is basically what I still do. I get inspired by music the most but also jealousy; seeing other people's work and how well they're doing makes me angry in an inspired kind of way and it keeps me going.
Which publication are you proud of? Anything you would like to do someday?
I was published in Frankie Magazine, which is a magazine in Australia, kind of like Elle but a bit more interesting. I'm proud of that because they picked lovely photos and I would love to do more for magazines like that. It's only a small thing though, I wish I got more jobs like these. If I could make a living doing my photography and my music, I will be happy. That's all I want to do.

Photography by Sandrine Castellan
Capturing her world through a lens has been her obsession ever since she started photographing at the age of 14: "- I started photographing at 14. I was mostly taking pictures of my friends and spending all my free time in the dark room at school. Then I switched to video as I had to specialize, and Photography was not an option in my school... So I became more obsessed with motion pictures rather than static pictures. After graduation I went back to photography and fashion came to me naturally after few years of experimenting different aspects of photography. I have been shooting professional fashion photography for almost 2 years now."
Sandrine Castellan is based out of NYC and Montreal, and has had her work featured in publications such as Papier Mache, Darizine, Snap!, and Contributor magazine in the short time she's been shooting professionally. Apart from the works of other photographers such as Lina Scheynius, Sofia Coppola, Mark Borthwick, Inez and Vinoodh, she says her main inspiration comes from contemporary and ballet dance, music and cinema: "- Usually those three mediums move me, surprise me and intrigue me the most. There is a power and an intensity that I hardly find somewhere else and that I try to apply to my photography work."

Dame De La Maison by Sebastian Brüll
We at Ben Trovato have presented hundreds of up and coming and unknown fashion photographers to our readers, and today we are doing it again. Introducing Sebastian Brüll, a Cologne based aspiring photographer, that has never before had his work published. Today he is making his debut on the BT stage with a fabulous exclusive titled Dame De La Maison, including Elisa from Imm Models, styled by Heike Heldsdörfer, and hair and make up done by Sandra Globke. Most of the fashion was provided by designers Antonia Goy, Natalie Richards and Ricarda Enderweit.
Sebastian says this about the story: "- I got inspired by the precious castle which made me think of a wonderful type of model and flowing, shining dresses. I wanted to put together a luxurious, exclusive scene that gives you a hint into the modern live of a noble landlady."
He started taking pictures in the beginning of 2006 when he bought his first DSLR, exploring landscapes through the lens. However, in 2009 he decided to switch out landscapes with human subjects: "- In april 2009 I started to do my first steps in people photography. In august 2010 I began working with professional models and a team of makeup artists and stylists on a regular basis."
Fashion magazines and blogs are the main sources of inspiration for most of his work, and he mentions the work on Patrick Demarchelier as especially inspiring, but he points out that not all inspiration comes from the work of others: "- Sometimes inspiration comes very spontaneous during a shooting when the light falls through the window and by that an interesting pattern appears on the walls."
Currently being based out of Cologne, Sebastian is planning to relocated to Berlin to study photography, and will be looking for opportunities as an assistant for other photographers.

Photography by Andrea D’Aquino
29 year old Italian photographer Andrea D'Aquino works between Barcelona, Hamburg and Stuttgart, and has been shooting professionally for about 10 years now: "- I started taking pictures when I was 16. I had this really bad camera, 30 dollars plastic shit! I had no skills and I didn't even know how to put a film in the camera. The background for it was that I realized that my family didn't have a collection of family pictures because my father didn't like pictures. Isn't that funny? I've always loved pictures, so I wanted to change this! I became addicted and started professional training when i was 19. My boss allowed me to use all his equipment on weekends (every type of camera, films, darkroom and so on), I learned a lot and had a great time. Today I'm 29 years old ... I'm still addicted."
His work has been featured in publications such as QVEST, Vs Magazine, SCHÖN! Magazine, and Hypebeast Magazine, and when asked about what inspires him he could go on about it all day: "- Inspires me? Good question .... a lot of things! I really need to mention women. I really love to photograph different kinds of women. It's always a great experience. To take good pictures of a model I always have to be in love with her or what I see (in theory), it can be the face, the way she moves, the attitude, the lips, eyes, everything ... when I see nothing interesting i don't take good pictures. Other things that inspires me are movies, music, pictures and and the works of other photographers. And natural light, I love how sunlight shapes everything that surrounds us ... endless inspiration."

Devon Rex by Kasia Bielska
She made her debut on Ben Trovato back in March, with the popular story Three Colors - RED. Now Cracow based Kasia Bielska is ready with a new Ben Trovato exclusive story. Devon Rex features beautiful model Karolina from Mango Models, and as last time, the stylist for the shoot was Kamila Picz, make up artist was Marcin Szczepaniak, and Tymoteusz Pieta from Claudius Hair Tresser Team did the hair.
Kasia says this about the story: "- Our inspiration were pieces from the collection of Magda Muzyka. Magda based prints of her colorful carapaces mainly on brain tomography and that's why Kamila's styling has the mixture of textures like latex, bandages or cat skin. The photos themselves are very sterile and clean with the strong color accent."
She is currently studying at the film school in Lodz, and last time I interviewed her she said she usually found inspiration in the things around her, may that be colors, light or space: “- It is often a fairytale, though. Ones that come to me in dreams that I still remember in the morning. For some miraculous reason.”

Beach Night by Alan Chan
His last story for Ben Trovato was a big success, and last month Alan Chan assembled a team to shoot another exclusive for us. Beach Night was shot in Vancouver mid-March, and features model Lilian L from Lizbell Agency, who was styled by Janet Li, had make up done by Mary Anne Richardson, and hair by Carolynne Collyer.
Alan says this about Beach Night: "- The story is about a girl just enjoying herself on the beach from sunset till night. The original plan was to shoot this with a glorious sunset in the background right into the night. But being from Vancouver, Canada, the weather here in March just wasn't going to allow us to do that. We decided to shoot in the rain with freezing temperatures. This gave our shoot another look since we had the overcast skies and the dark wet sand. With hindsight, I wouldn't have shot this any other day, because I just love how the pictures turned out. It was a perfect day!"
This is Alan's third feature on Ben Trovato, his first was in August 2010.

Photography by Jeff Hahn
Swiss/Chinese photographer Jeff Hahn started shooting when he was about 13 or 14. Today, years later, the London based photographer's work has been featured in publications such as Post Magazine, Hong Kong Tatler, Kee Magazine, Peninsula Magazine and WestEast Magazine, and a few online like Idol and Vice(Style).
He mentions the work of Wing Shya, Paolo Roversi and Guy Bourdin as sources of inspiration, but when working on shoots Jeff likes to block out all noise, and get inspired entirely by the moment: "- I tend to work in a bit of a vacuum with regards to inspiration, which isn't a good thing at all, but I think all the magic and inspiration happens when the model is in front of the camera and everything is happening, the light is shining perfectly and the pose is spot on, and I'm working with some really great looks from a visionary stylist, then I really get inspired."

Yasmin by Rita Zimmermann
When our friend Rita Zimmermann recently spent three weeks in Brazil, a story for Ben Trovato was one of the points on her to-do-list. Out of the three weeks in Brazil, she spent four days in Rio de Janeiro, and one of those with the alluring Brazilian model Yasmin. Yasmin is also the title of the story that was the outcome of the beautiful day: "- I met with Yasmin, and spent a wonderful day with her. I was trying to come up with a title for the story we made in Rio, but in the end it's Yasmin - through my eyes but with her expression. Its always a challenge, you are meeting the person for the first time, whom you dont know anything about. Then you end up speaking, laughing, and feel all these emotions, and just make the photos." As Bruce Weber said in an interview with Movieline back in 09: "- I’m always so happy at the end of a shoot or a movie when people become friends. It’s one of the best compliments you can have as a filmmaker or photographer, that people walk away and know that they’re going to have a long relationship."
Rita explains the story further: "- The story is about a Brazilian girl like in the famous Frank Sinatra song- "Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking." -Mysterious, sexy, funny -the kind of girl you can love, or hate -nothing in between."
Rita more about Rita Zimmermann, what inspires her, and how she got into photography in our profile of her and her work back in January.

Photography by Veronika Faustmann
"- I started taking pictures when I was about 10 years old," says Veronika Fasutmann, and continues: "- my father taught me how to develop black and white films. I just loved the magic evolving around these pictures appearing on the paper and from that point on I was hooked." In 2006, the Hamburg based creative decided to make photography her fulltime job, and has been shooting fashion ever since. By the span of her 5 years in the business she has worked for commercial clients such as Esprit and Otto, and had her work featured in respected publications such as Maxi and Teaser.
She says she's inspired by the people that surrounds her, and their stories, moods and states of mind, and adds: "- I am also inspired by the idea, that things are changing every moment. With my camera i am searching for these little special moments in between, when something is about to change or when you can feel some sweet sadness or great happiness– theses moments I try to capture on film."
