Elena Kalis lives on a small island in the Bahamas, surrounded by clear warm ocean. During her childhood she spend a lot of time in the water and often with her camera. It comes to no surprise that she was always intrigued and inspired by how things look very different underwater: Shapes, lights, colors are shifting all the time, everything is vivid and fluid. Elena became interested in capturing this specific environment and specialised in underwater photography and we at Ben Trovato have always been a fan of this young lady, so time for a chat.
I'm pretty confident I already know the answer, but can you tell us what your biggest source of inspiration is?
" -The ocean. It’s vast and multifaceted. One day it is bright, sunny and fun. Yet there is another side which is darkness, unconsciousness, death. I can never get tired from it and it is my main daily dose of inspiration."
The Alice in Waterland series have been extremely popular and can easily be labelled as an internet phenomenon, but how did it all started?
" -Alice in Wonderland is my favorite book of all time. It’s limitless and free. It is open to interpretations and so many people are inspired by it. It occurs to me that the place Alice found herself when she fell in the rabbit hole, or when she went on the other side of the mirror, has the same quality as being underwater; different perception of reality, weightless, a dreamlike surreal feeling. I took it from there and made my own interpretation of the story. I shared a few images on art-photo sites and it was a complete surprise that it would spread so quickly. I was still in the middle of the project and it was already all over the internet, with people asking me for interviews etc. It is amazing that you can reach so many people in a very short period of time, especially considering that I live on the island with a population of a few hundred people."
Has your work been published? In what magazines? What are you currently working on?
" -I have done a few book covers, including upcoming novel by Nova Ren Suma “Imaginary Girls” (Penguin group) which I just read and liked very much. I was also published in many magazines in countries like China, Korea, USA, Greece, Span, Israel and a latest cover story for Italian “Photo Cult” to name a few. I am pushing further with underwater photography, looking for new concepts and ideas. It is fascinating and a rich subject for me."

LOW by Kris De Smedt
"- It started out as a hommage to David Bowie, to give a female model an extra masculine side. Gino brought a lot of wigs to the shoot and since Stephanie looked great with almost all of them, we decided to make a male and a female version of the same personae," says Belgian Kris De Smidt when explaining his first ever Ben Trovato Exclusive. LOW features the classic beauty Stephanie Frederickx from Dominique Models, who was perfectly styled by Brunel Mintona, and had make up and hair done by Gino Beeckman.
The Antwerp based photographer is represented by C'est Chic Agency in brussels, and his work has been published in various print and online magazines. He is generally inspired by people with "a good sense of bad taste," and he seems to be enjoying what he's doing these days. We sure do.

La Fille Sur Le Pont by Cristian Di Stefano
Cristian Di Stefano is originally from Buenos Aires, but has been living in Barcelona for the past ten years of his life. In 2005 he stepped in to the world of fashion photography, and he hasn't looked back since, getting his work published in Vogue (Spain, Italy & China), VS, Vice (Spain), ZINK, Dazed Digital, and many more. But now he's been shooting for Ben Trovato. The exclusive story titled La Fille Sur Le Pont is Cristian Di Stefano's first apperance on Ben Trovato, and it features the jaw dropping model Kristy Coulcher, that might be familiar to our Australian readers, as she was a contestant on Australia's Next Top Model back in 2008. Kristy was styled by Alegna Merlino using fashion from brands like Diesel, Codello, Metradamo, Lacoste, Basmar and others. Make up and hair was done by Barbara Bertuzzi.
Cristian says this about the story: "- The idea was to shoot in Venice because the city fascinates me for its magic, its light and situations, also by the proximity of the show room in Milan and the romantic feeling that I had with spectacular film of Patrice Leconte's 'La Fille sur le Pont.'"
Cristian is a self-proclaimed daydreamer, and says he's inspired by movies, music, memories, fantasies, but explains that basically everything is a source of inspiration when shooting.

Mojave by Susanne Kindt
The Los Angeles based photographer Susanne Kindt made her debut on Ben Trovato in March with her story Rain. Now the Swede is back with another nature inspired story, Mojave: "- Just northeast of Los Angeles is the Mojave desert, an amazing stretch of forgotten land where few people live but all my photography heroes have used as their backdrop. Abandoned houses, coyotes and scary roadhouses. I brought my team out there for a day's shoot with Alle from Next. The idea was to embody the surroundings and create a feeling of belonging."
Alle was styled by Devon Rodgers, and had make up done by Jose Monzon.
Susanne explained in her last apperance on Ben Trovato that she made the move from Stockholm to Los Angeles back in 2005 to assist for photographers like Miranda Penn Turin and Cliff Watts while shooting her book with the local modeling agencies. Read more about that here.

Photography by Lauren Withrow
Out of Dallas TX, 17 year old Lauren Withrow truly believes greatest joy in life is taking pictures. After starting off taking self portraits when she was 15, Lauren has lately gotten more and more attention for her talent. Now the fashion and fine art photographer has shot for several magazines, and is currently organizing her first solo gallery show in Dallas.
Lauren says expressions and the human mind is what inspires her the most: "- Those little twinges of the skin around the eyes when angry or disturbed, the slight widening of your eyes when you are concerned or surprised, or the ways we hide our lies. The different ways we process danger, pain, happiness, or love are unique to every individual and that is just amazing to me."
She hopes that through her images she can bring a little piece of her passion out into the world. She has definitely inspired us.

Sea Child by Kait Robinson
20-year old New York City based photographer Kait Robinson has set a goal to have her work published in a well-known print publication by the age of 25. Today Ben Trovato might take the young FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) student one step closer to that dream, by publishing her first exclusive story. Sea Child is a beautiful and natural story, featuring Karen Maruszewska from NEXT Miami, with hair and make up done by Aravany Fajardo, and styled by Kait herself.
Kait says this about the story: "- This story came to mind when I took a visit to my hometown in South Florida. There, I had lived most of my life, surrounded by the ocean and beautiful scenery, and had never shot at the beach! I initially saw an old illustration that was a cover of a Harper's Bazaar issue that showed a woman with shells placed all over her head. I immediately got the idea of shooting something "mermaid" inspired. One of the most important things to me was to ensure that the model had a very natural, organic relationship with her environment. I didn't want anything blatantly man-made to be present in the story. This is where the name "Sea Child" came into play. I was intrigued by the idea of the model being somehow spiritually connected with the ocean and other things involved with sea life."
She says she's generally inspired by music, films, fashion and even just living in New York City: "- I'm constantly being bombarded by hundreds and hundreds of images and visual information. It's practically impossible to not have a million ideas fluttering inside my head. And then, of course, there are the photographers- Miles Aldridge, Sølve Sundsbø, Tim Walker and Camilla Åkrans. They are all powerhouse photographers who collectively have fueled my determination to become a part of this industry."

"- I think most of the people really don’t know that I’m 16. It’s something that I don’t usually tell them, not because I don’t want to, just because I don't think it's necessary. I usually show my work first and then, if necessary I tell my age, but I have never thought age is important: It’s just a number! Talent and age aren’t bound," says Ana Larruy, that despite her young age has already managed to get a close professional relationship with some of Barcelona's best model agencies.
She was 13 the first time she used a camera, when her parents got her one as a present: "- I started taking pictures of everything I liked. I guess I started shooting fashion when I created my fashion blog, at 15. Nowadays I only shoot fashion; I organise the shootings with models, make up artists, stylists and we just shoot what I have in mind and, the most important, we have a good time!"
She says she's always open to be inspired, and that she could be inspired by almost anything: "- I can be walking through the city and suddenly see the sky and get inspired, which might sound strange, but it happens to me. Art, music and magazines also inspire me a lot. Looking through fashion magazines is the basis to all: you have to have knowledge about the trends of the moment, about models, make-up.. To create you have to know a lot first."

Jacob by Adam Fussell
Fresh out of school, Adam Fussel is now ready to leave his university city Leeds to go search for fame and fortune as a fashion photographer in London. His first step on the way? An exclusive story for Ben Trovato of course. In this male fashion story we meet Jacob from Strom Models portraying a lost boy in the big city, strolling around the backstreets of King's Cross, London. Stylist on the set was Sylvèster Yiu, and hair and make up was done by Kenny Leung.
Adam picked up a camera for the first time around two years ago while studying to become an illustrator: "- This lead me to put down the pen and ink and pick up the camera. I got into fashion photography under a year ago when I realized the potential fashion photography could offer in creating extraordinary representations of creativity and imagination."
His favorite photographers are Hedi Slimane, David Bailey and Mert and Marcus, and his work is often influenced by films, music, and travel: "- I get most of my ideas from people and surrounding myself around other creatives and like minded people. Photography by Teresa Queirós
When you run a photography blog such as Ben Trovato, you get literally flooded by submissions every day (no offense, keep 'em coming!). However we feel it's important to dedicate a part of our precious time to manually scavenge the internet ourselves and try to find fresh talented people, sometimes running into someone who manages to peak our curiosity. Not so long ago, I stumbled upon Teresa Q on Flickr and was heavily drawn to her work.
You have been featured on blogs and websites all over the world, however it's hard to find any information on Teresa. Could you tell me something about yourself and how did you get in touch with photography?
" -I like to keep it that way, I like it that my private life isn't all over my blog or Facebook. I've got nothing against people who do it - I actually find it quite interesting - it's just not for me. Besides, I never really know what to write about me. Everytime someone asks me to write a little bio or describe myself, I always feel trapped in a tiny black box where I can't even stretch my toes. I'm the typical average girl, I think, I've got my quirks just like everybody, but that's it.
I started taking pictures for fun mostly, with a friend of mine, but I got increasingly interested in it and the passion grew, naturally. Nowadays I take it a little more seriously, but not to the point where I want to be the best or strive to be super original or think of myself as a professional photographer; I just love it to bits and want to keep shooting, as simple as that. And of course that it is marvellous that people actually want to follow what I'm doing and give me all this awesome feedback, it definately motivates me to keep shooting."
Do you feel it's hard to evolve from an internet photography sensation into a professional photographer? In what ways do you successfully promote your work?
" -Well, I think the internet is a fantastic way to promote yourself - even though it comes with the downside of having lots of people using your work without credits or even stealing it and pretending it's theirs - you are able to have your work seen by any person in the world and, if you're lucky (and a good photographer), someone can actually want to invest in you and want to hire you. So, I think it's not that big of a leap, actually. It's probably an easy step to take and a natural one, I guess. It's a bit like the talent show syndrome; the people showcasing in the show were already talented before the show existed, they just needed someone to find them and invest in them. There are so many yet-to-be-known photographers out there who are so much better than lots of so-called professional photographers, they just need a chance.
I don't really promote myself all that much. I have my Flickr where I post my latest works, I've recently created a blog where I mostly write about the making of stories and little bits of my life as well; and I created a photography Facebook account because many people tried to add my personal one, but since I do like to keep my privacy, I created this other one that people can "Like". I think I'm quite terrible at promoting myself, actually."
How do you see yourself in 5-10 years? What goals do you still want to achieve in your life? What is Teresa dreaming of?
" -Ah, this is one of those questions... I have no idea really. I hope I'm working in the different areas I'm passionate about (music, photography, acting), that would be blissful. I want to have lots of projects in hand, I want to go crazy for having so little time for all I have to do, all the while being happy that I'm working on the things I love doing the most, I want to be travelling a lot, I want to keep my best friends close to me throughout these years, I want to have read at least a hundred books more, to have watched at least five hundred more movies, I want to know about a million more things that I don't even know exist at this very moment, I want to be much more... oh, and I'd like a good love story as well."

Nevermind by Macushla Burke
Two years ago when I discovered Macushla Burke, I was so impressed with the former model's photography that I decided to feature it. I posted without knowing a lot about her or her work, but since then, Macushla has kept me updated on her progress and projects, so it was very exciting when Macushla contacted Ben Trovato a few weeks back telling us she'd shot a story for us. Needless to say, we loved it.
Nevermind is inspired by summer days growing up at the beach, listening to 90’s rock music and the freedom of those days spent on your own time, in your own headspace: "- This fashion story conjures up a lot of feelings for me, as well as encompassing one of my favourite albums when I was growing up. It reminds me of broken hearts, teenage angst, rebellion, wandering aimlessly with beauty in solitude, hence the title ‘Nevermind’"
The story is a collaboration between Macushla and model Christina Dietze with Chadwick, Melbourne: "- I have shot Chrissie many times and because this may be the last chance we get to shoot together in a while. We decided to spend a day, without the rest of the fashion team and enjoy each other’s company whist creating a cool story."
Macushla have nether studied nor sort out fashion photography as her career: "- It has become a passion from my final days modeling, when I felt I had out-grown the days on the casting couch. I needed something that wouldn’t have me stuck in a 9 – 5 job. I have worked hard assisting many of the photographers I once modeled for. I now have a creative outlet that has continued on from being in front of the camera, it has allowed me to express myself, escape and create, and that makes me feel good."

The Black Bride by Laura Cammarata
Since she started shooting at the age of 16, the 20-year-old Palermo based photographer Laura Cammarata has been dreaming of having her work published. Today is the day when she takes the stage in front of an international audience, with her first Ben Trovato Exclusive titled The Black Bride. Model Chiara Quartararo is dressed in her mother's old wedding dress, with suitable make up and hair done by Adriana Tedeschi, all perfectly put together to transform Chiara into the Black Bride. Laura says this about the story: "- 'The Black Bride' idea was born a few months ago when I was casually looking through a bride magazine: the models were perfect, smiley, in the right place at the right time. I liked the idea of reversing this perfection into something more dramatic and strong. So, I decided to mix this angelic idea of bride with the image of the Black Widow. Then, my team and I decided about the dress, makeup and the location. The dress is appropriate, it reminds me of some elegant old style and a bit creepy at the same time."
She says that literally everything surrounding her can be a great source of inspiration: movies, songs, books, fashion magazines, but of course, also masters of photography such as Richard Avedon, Tim Walker, Rodney Smith, Irving Penn just to mention a few: "- There are so many things to list. Since I started getting more and more interested in photography 3 years ago, everything I have seen, listened and experienced has begun a stable part of my imagery. Sometimes, I can still remember scenes of my childhood, as if they were just there, ready to pop up and give me inspiration.
Some nights I can also dream about shots I've not taken yet and this gives me great ideas!"

Photography by Sivan Miller
Sivan Miller started shooting about five years ago when his mother bought him his first digital compact camera overseas. Now the Cape Town based photographer is shooting professionally, and making his way up the industry latter: "- My plans for the future are to break into the fashion / commercial industry and one day shoot for Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, etc. I would also love to shoot big campaigns for clothing brands. I am working on it every day so lets hold thumbs and see."
He's inspired by the works of Annie Leibowitz, Mario Testino and a few international photographers from around the world, but he also draws inspiration from life and the world around us: "- I love the idea of taking what seems to be dull and boring to the average person and transforming it into a whole world filled with color and imagination."

Cliff by Kyle Goldie
"It's time to think big," says Kyle Goldie, a Seattle based photographer that after graduating business school decided to pursue a career in fashion photography. "- I need to move to a major fashion market." he continues, before explaining: "- Currently, I am based out of Seattle, but after a few years shooting here, I am ready to enter a large market. I am currently seeking out opportunities around the globe, and In the near future I will be searching for photography agencies that are able to represent my brand and style well. I've had a few in the past locally, but am currently back to freelance. I am also planning to start holding exhibitions in Canada and. the United States to showcase my personal work."
And the first step on he way? A Ben Trovato exclusive story of course. In Cliff, Kyle shoots a striking Malene Søndergaard Jensen (Option Model Management) on a jaw dropping location, with the help of stylist Melissa LaChance, and with hair and make up done by Madeline Roosevelt. Kyle says this about the story: "- For this story, I didn't want to do something that I've ever seen before. Usually photographers, myself included, are inspired at least a little by another body of work and take our own style approach to that editorial. Well, for this story, I simply found a beautiful, edgy editorial model and the perfect location to create a mood. After the shoot was planned out and the team was put together, we had the option of either shooting in the rain or waiting it out to shoot in the sun. I thought to myself, "What a better way to do something that is not really done..." So, I jumped at the opportunity to shoot in the rain. With the double-sided cliff location, wet and wind-blown model, and sex appealing wardrobe, I could not wait to drive the 300 miles back home to edit the story."
Kyle's inspired by nearly everything around him, from the color of a landscape to the fabric of a garment: "- An entire story I shoot may not necessarily derive from a particular place or person, but something as simple as a mood or passing comment. It's all about what catches my attention, even if that moment may seem mundane to the next person."

Royal Savage by Kate Daigneault
Based out of Southern California working mostly in San Diego and Los Angeles, Kate Daigneault is looking to make a name for her self in the business. And today she is making her debut on Ben Trovato with the exclusive story titled Royal Savage. Featuring Morgan from Scout Model and Talent, taking the role of a young woman sort left alone in this vast, lonely place. Morgan had hair and make up done by Brooke Hill, and was styled by Kate herself with fashion from American Apparel, GAP, Jeffrey Campbell and others.
Kate says this about the story: "- This story, called Royal Savage, was actually inspired by the crowns which I made out of found objects. Its about this young woman sort of left alone in this vast, lonely place. She takes this as an opportunity to become the ruler of this world. I decided to keep the styling pretty simple and use mostly gold and jewel tones to help this out. Morgan was a great model because she is just starting university and in a way starting a similar journey."
She finds the works of fellow photographers such as Tim Walker, Gemma Booth and Jamie Nelson, very inspiring, but that's not all: "- I'm inspired by a million things a day! Usually it's a location I happen come upon or some strange prop in one of my favorite thrift stores. It can also be as simple as a color combination or pattern I see in a mundane object. I think my biggest inspiration thus far has been Southern California as a whole, there are so many diverse and amazing natural backdrops here. I really love all the flora and fauna, especially Cacti and Succulents and feel like the whole area has a very retro feel to it, even the brand new bits. "
As for the future, Kate's just trying to shoot as much as possible right now, and enjoying what she does: "-I love collaborating with up and coming stylists and make up artists because everyone is just so excited to be doing what they love. I hope to make more connections with designers and magazines and keep working on personal projects. And I don't want to jinx it but I may also be making a big move in the next year which would hopefully open huge doors of opportunity for me."

"- When I was 12 I would flip through the yellow pages to find ads for tanning beds, because they always had pictures of babes in bikinis, thinking 'This photographer is the luckiest guy in the world.' So I saved up my allowance for a couple of months and bought a Polaroid camera, which I only used to take photos of cars. You should see those photos. Their pretty rad." That's how New York City based photographer Spencer Wohlrab describes how he got into photography. Now he's working closely with Milk Made and ABC Journal, and you can always find his work floating around the pages of these online publications, along with anything closely following New York Fashion Week.
Currently he is working on a book, that will be self published, and he is hoping it will hit the New York art scene by fashion week: "-It will be a photo journal touching on deceit, love, romance, and lament and will hopefully get me a lot of exposure in the young art world and become a gateway for me to shoot more commercial work."
When asking him about his inspiration he says his inspired by heartbreak, and that you can always find a hint of desperation and longing within his work.

Desert Rose by Aaron Feaver
Aaron Feaver might be a familiar name to a lot of our readers, due to his highly popular photography blog. Today he's stepping into the spotlight here on Ben Trovato, with an exclusive story titled Desert Rose. It was shot at the Salton Sea, about 90 minutes east of Palm Springs, and features the beautiful Shannon Roxanne with Q Models, which is also Aaron's girlfriend. She's wearing fashion from her own wardrobe, and had hair and make up done by Kali Kennedy. "- The Salton Sea is a crazy, post-apocalyptic-looking place, and I like the way a pretty person in pretty clothes stands out in contrast to the landscape," Aaron says, and explains that the story is a nice mix of digital and 6x7 film.
Aaron finds inspiration in a lot of things, but more than anything his girlfriend: "- I'm constantly taking pictures of her, and she always pushes me to be better, and I'm also inspired by my photographer friends who bust their asses for every job." One of the places where he collected some of his inspiration was his popular blog: "- Yeah, I wanted a way to keep track of photographers and photos that I liked. I never expected the blog to be popular at all. Unfortunately I don't really have the time to keep the blog going any more," he explains, and admits it helped him get more attention around his own work: "- Definitely. Like I said I never thought it'd be popular, so it initially wasn't going to be about my photos. Once it started getting a lot of visitors, though, I started sneaking in posts featuring my own photos."
Earlier he's shot for Foam, Kinki and for several issues of Sloane. Having only recently started shooting fulltime, Aaron's always on the lookout for new projects that will help him develop as a photographer.
